The age structure at The Sultan’s School is different to other schools that come under the supervision of Oman’s Ministry of Education. In recent years The Sultan’s School has changed from delivering a locally administered curriculum and examination system and become a fully Accredited International School offering the English National Curriculum, IGCSEs and the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IBD) alongside the Ministry of Education’s Basic Education Curriculum which covers the Arabic Subjects.

It is very important to the success of our students that they are placed in age appropriate classes thereby ensuring their cognitive and developmental milestones are at a stage appropriate to the curriculum being delivered. This is extremely important in the primary years where the foundations are laid for a high standard of competency in English; this enables students to successfully access the curriculum in the secondary years. Sticking to our old age boundaries also meant that students taking IGCSEs and the IBD were, on average, seven months younger than students taking the same examinations in the rest of the world.

Altering our age boundaries has meant that
we can successfully deliver a curriculum which prepares students for the rigours of demanding external examinations
and
we have raised the average school leaving age to 18 (the world norm) thus increasing our students’ chances of enhanced IGCSE and IBD performance; it is interesting to note that this change can increase scores, on average, by 3+ points.

As a result of these changes all students who are new to the school will be placed in age appropriate classes.
