Sultan’s School Tops The UN Agenda!
Following the major success of last year’s Oman Model United Nations Project, we are now expanding the project into a major international conference, which will take place at The Sultan’s School on Wednesday 22nd and Thursday 23rd February 2006.

For the second year in a row, the ground-breaking nature of our Oman MUN project has been rewarded by an invitation to send four students to the Students’ League of Nations, a prestigious international conference in the Palais des Nations itself in Geneva, between 10th and 14th December 2005.

This year, two of our students have really excelled themselves. As part of their preparation for the Geneva conference, all participating students have to write and submit a draft resolution on an issue of international importance. Over a hundred draft resolutions are submitted and just five are selected for debate at the conference.

We are therefore extremely proud to announce that Maha Al-Ghafri and Basma Hussein have had their resolution selected as one of the five for debate. Bearing in mind that many local participants have direct connections with the UN in Geneva, this is an even more impressive achievement – and to cap it all, their resolution is first on the agenda, top of the list! Congratulations, girls . . . now we really are impressed . . .

We also have excellent news regarding the Oman Model United Nations Conference itself. Last year, we were delighted to be joined by ten other local schools from the capital area of Oman, but our long-term objective was always to turn the Oman MUN into a full-scale international project. We are delighted to inform you that our local partner schools have now been joined by nine leading overseas schools from as near as Dubai and as far as the UK – all of whom will be sending a selection of their very best students to the conference in February.

Not only will these students greatly enhance the standard of debate at the conference, they will also introduce a welcome cultural exchange element to the project, so important now that we have moved across to the IGCSE and IB curriculums here at The Sultan’s School. We do hope you enjoy entertaining our guests in February, and giving them a proper Sultan’s School Omani welcome! And we are confident this will prove to be just the start of a long and fruitful partnership for all concerned.
