My name is Luma Al Saleh, a Sultan's School Alumni, class of 97. I would like to share some news about myself. In May 2006, I graduate from Columbia University with a Master's Degree in Clinical Social Work concentration in Family and Children, Summa Cum Laude (Highest Honors). After my graduation, I was granted a Fulbright Fellowship at the UN. The UN Fulbright Fellowship Programme allows UN offices to take advantage of assistance from well-qualified students and junior professionals. U.S. Fulbright Fellows from developing countries who have completed their Masters degrees on Fulbright scholarships in their areas of expertise are invited to apply for a six-month funded fellowship to work in a UN office on specific concrete projects the office has already determined.
In 2003, the inaugural year, the Programme assigned 20 Fellows to various offices at UN Headquarters in New York as well as in Vienna, Geneva and several Regional Commissions. This year, the Programme placed the five scholars pictured – two from Africa, one from the Middle East, and two from Latin America – at various offices in New York. Luma Al Saleh of Oman worked on a project analyzing the roots of conflict in Sudan and examining how these may be addressed and how they have impacted the work of humanitarian workers in the region. Their fellowships will be drawing to a close in the middle of December.
Attached is also a picture of the UN Fulbright Fellows with the current Secretary General Mr. Kofi Annan.
Best regards,
Luma Al Saleh
