IBD and IGCSE Press Conference & Presentation Ceremony

On Tuesday 2nd October 2007 at The Salalah Room, The Chedi Hotel a ceremony was held recognizing the outstanding success of some of our students in the IGCSE and IB examinations.

The four students who received awards from The Chairman of The Board of Trustees of The Sultan’s School, H.E Mohammed bin Abdullah Al-Riyami, all achieved the highest grades awarded by The University of Cambridge International Examination Board of A and A* in their portfolio of results. They were

Salma Al Battashi (5 A*s and 3 As)

Asma Day (5 A*s; 2 As and 1 B)

Atheer Al-Haddabi (5A*s, 2 As and 1 B)

Manal Al-Adawi (3A*s; 4 As and 1 B)

This year’s IGCSE results are the best in the school’s three-year history of presenting for these exams.  78 candidates presented for a total of 583 individual examinations.  78% of these examinations resulted in passes in the range of A*-C grade as compared to last year when the figure was 65%. A total of 48 A* grades and 90 A grades were achieved.

After their success in the I.G.C.S.E. examinations The Sultan’s School students are now embarking on another course of study. The two year International Baccalaureate Diploma course of study is a demanding pre-university course that is designed for highly motivated secondary school students aged 16 to 19 and encompasses a comprehensive two-year international curriculum; it also has allowed our students to fulfill requirement to proceed straight into the first year of university study without the need for a foundation year.

The IBD Programme has enabled students at The Sultan’s School to gain one of the world’s top pre-university qualifications, allowing them to compete for places in prestigious universities in over 100 countries.

“The Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) has developed a new tariff system which gives the International Baccalaureate an A-level equivalence for the first time.

An IB score of 38 points out of a maximum of is deemed to be equivalent to a staggering five A grades at A-level.
Oxford and Cambridge typically ask for around 40 points which equates to five-and-half A grades.
A relatively modest IB score of 35 points is worth four-and-a-half A grades at A-level.
Even 30 IB points reflects three-and-a-half As at A-level which is enough to secure entry to most academically selective universities. And an IB pass is worth two As, according to the tariff being introduced in 2008.”
