P.E. News

I am pleased to inform you of recent updates, results, initiatives and new additions to the department this semester.

A new challenge for all students this semester within their curriculum was “Fitness Fortnight”.This involved all students undertaking various fitness challenges, which highlighted their strengths, weaknesses and areas for improvement! This has proved so successful that it will be repeated at the end of the academic year, and underpin further curriculum work.

During Ramadan, all students experienced a range of fun, team building activities. Challenges included obstacle courses, problem solving challenges, partner and group trust activities as well as Miss Gillian’s favourite – Leaky Pipes!

This half semester the students have been preparing for the School Cross-Country Races, which due to National day holidays will now take place on Monday 26th November 2007. Further information will be sent out shortly and a full report can be found in the next edition of this newsletter.

The P.E. Department have also organised a number of fixtures for the students against other schools. The fixtures are on the P.E. notice boards outside the changing rooms. Reports for volleyball and football can be found below.

Further developments have also included the introduction of a Kayaking club and weight training programme for IGCSE students, which again offers the students a greater range of choice, variety and enjoyment.

The P.E. Department has two new members of staff. Ms. Jenelle Taylor joins us from Singapore as a new Girl’s P.E. teacher. Mr. Lee Mulliss  joins us from Nottingham to complete the department. We wish them both every success.

Finally, the P.E. Department would like to extend their congratulations to Mrs. Gillian (Head of Girl’s P.E.), who this summer gave birth to her first daughter Olivia. We wish Gillian, Neil and Olivia well.

Open Boy’s Volleyball News

Open Boy’s Volleyball Tournament at A.B.A. – Sunday 21st October

Due to Ramadan, the boys only had the opportunity to enter the season end tournament kindly hosted by A.B.A. Captain Salim Al Adi Grade 12 wrote,

“We were invited to participate in a volleyball tournament at the ABA school on Sunday 21st of October. We played against the best International Schools in Muscat, which was an honour. The games we played proved to be very close, but the other schools on this occasion proved to be too strong. We competed against ABA, TAISM, British school, and the Indian school.

There was a lot of determination and skill shown by our players such as Khalid Al-Kharusi who surprised the opposing TAISM team with tremendous varieties of serve. Mansoor Al-Fahdi, Ibrahim Sarhani and Mohammed Al-Rahbi all worked tirelessly at the net and in defence.

At the end, I think our players gave their all and we did have fun with our coach Mr. Russ.”

Senior Girl’s Volleyball

On October 20th 2007 The Sultan’s School Senior Girls Volleyball team participated in a tournament held at The Sultan’s School. Alongside our school, TAISM, ABA and The Indian School of Muscat (ISM) participated.

The volleyball season has been a very short one due to Ramadan, so our girls were lacking any kind of match experience. With this in mind the girls should be proud of their performance as they played some close fought battles and were very consistent with their serving. TAISM were the eventual winners of the tournament closely followed by ABA. The Sultan’s School were third with ISM in fourth place.

Nejood Al Khasibi gained confidence as the tournament progressed and proved to be a reliable captain. Fatma Al Ghassany, Fatma Al Nager, Huwayna Al Yahyahi and Maha Al Tuati worked hard and were very consistent throughout the game. Well done.

Under 16 Boy’s Volleyball

On October 20th 2007 The Sultan’s School U16’s Volleyball team participated in a tournament held at the American British Academy (ABA.)

Alongside our school and ABA, two other schools participated; these schools were the Indian School Muscat (ISM) and The American International School Muscat  (TAISM.)

All the teams were aiming for first place, but only one team can walk away cheerfully and that team was the host, ABA, due to their excellent team work ability and communication between the squad members. The runner-ups are as follows ISM in the second place, The Sultan’s School in the third and TAISM in fourth despite their well-organised team.

We played three matches and each match was a 1 set rally point to 25, and we lost all four matches, afterwards we went for our play-offs against TAISM for 3rd and 4th place, were we played a 3 set rally point to 25, however we ended the match before the third set by winning the first and second sets deservedly.

After a comparison, we realised that our individual’s volleyball skills were equal to those of the other teams’ members and that by itself was a lesson, I also think we could have performed better, but we lacked match practise as the training sessions were tight and scheduled for Ramadan.

Sami Ayedeh and Abdulrahman Al-Amri were the most critical members of the team, Sami earned us points from his outstanding spikes and Abdulrahman’s serves were vital.

Open Boy’s Football v British School -27th Oct 07

The open boy’s opened their season with a comprehensive 5-0 win over the British school. A solitary first half strike from Issa Ismaili was quickly followed up with goals from Mohammed Rahbi (2), Tariq Riyami and Ali Yaqubi.

Well played to you all and a special mention to Yahya Al Lawati 11W who was representing the Sultan’s school for the first time.

Open Boy’s Football v TAISM 5th Nov 07

A strong, robust and well drilled TAISM team ensured The Sultan’s School had to raise their game to a new level.  Centre forward Issa Ismaily calmly put The Sultan’s School ahead early on, but TAISM levelled through a penalty. Against the run of play Ahmed Ghafri drilled a crisp half volley past the TAISM keeper to make it 2-1 at half time.

The Sultan’s School started the second half more determined, but TAISM were again awarded a penalty after a handball. However keeper Maitham Shidi was not to be beaten a second time and guessed correctly to save superbly.

The Sultan's School regrouped and further strikes from Captain Mansoor Fahdi, Omar Harthy and Ahmed Ghafri ensured the game finished 5-1 to The Sultan’s School.

Well played to you all.

Open Boy’s Football v A.B.A. Sat 10th Nov

The Open Boy’s survived a late fight back from ABA to emerge with their third consecutive win of the season.

The Sultan’s School scored early through Ahmed Ghafri and this was added to, late in the first half, as Issa Ismaily was first to react to a high ball and head home. ABA had obviously not read the script for the second half and came out in far more determined mood. They were to gain their reward as they scored from a penalty and then kept The Sultan’s School pressed deep in their half.

A late flurry from The Sultan’s School saw a goal firstly disallowed, but forward Issa Ismaily was not to be denied and coolly dispatched a third late in injury time.

Final Score The Sultan’s School 3 ABA 1

As the open boy’s remain unbeaten, they are looking as favourites for the end of semester inter schools tournament. Watch this space.

New kayaking programme at The Sultan’s School

Ms. Angela Hargett, in conjunction with Muscat Diving and Adventure Centre has introduced kayaking to the Sultan’s school. Ms Angela writes;

“We have recently started a pilot kayaking activity for Grade 11 CAS students. The aim of the activity is to enable students to improve their confidence in a kayak and on water. The training and assessments are for highly motivated learners with open minds and a sense of discovery, who want to understand and enjoy kayaking to its fullest potential. So far, the activity has been a great success. We are aiming to provide the course to a wider age range in the near future. “Kayaking is the coolest activity ever that most people only dream of taking part in…”Hamood Kharusi
