THE NEWSLETTER OF THE SULTAN’S SCHOOL
Volume I, Issue III, 10th June 2005

From The Principal
Yet another year at The Sultan's School is at an end. As we look back, all concerned can feel a real sense of satisfaction at the progress which has been made in many different fields. Growth in student numbers has taken place at all levels. The curriculum has been revitalised through staff training in all sections of the school. The new international qualifications have been firmly established as part of the school's culture with our first diet of examinations going very smoothly indeed. Finally the campus has continued to be enhanced by the addition of new, custom-designed facilities which will make for better future provision for all.

Looking forward to September 2005, the school is well placed to continue its march forward. Staff turnover is very small with only 7 teachers leaving us this year, two of whom are retiring. On this note we must pay a warm debt of gratitude to Mr Don Yager who has committed a huge part of his adult life to the school and the Scholarship programme in particular, having been with it since its introduction many years ago.
We also thank Mrs Cordie Giffen, Head of Primary, for injecting so much of her professionalism into the Elementary School during her three years as Head. We wish both Don and Cordie a happy and fulfilling retirement. We also bid a fond farewell to Mr and Mrs Keith Price of the Music Department, Mr Andrew Sutton in Physical Education, Mr Mark Silcox from the Chemistry Department, Melinda Conn from Lower Primary, kath Cairncross from Science Dept. and Mrs Fahmida Salliou from ESL. We thank each of them for their contribution and wish them every success in the next phase of their career.

All replacement staff have been recruited next year along with others to cater for the natural growth in the schools numbers and the expansion in the Secondary curriculum. We look forward to another very challenging and rewarding year of progress. Thanks to you all as parents for your continued support and encouragement. We look forward to serving you again in the new school year ahead.

IB NEWS
The present Grade 10 students have now finished their IGCSE examinations and the Examinations Officer has been very pleased with their attitude and application. Not only did students take the customary written exams but all students also sat an English Listening Test, where they had to write responses to statements and questions from an audio-cassette. A further challenge was imposed by the Head of Science, Mr Blackman and his team, who administered a Chemistry Practical Test in the laboratory. The students performed well in this different yet interesting form of assessment.

After their examinations, the 10th Grade had an IB Induction Course from May 30 till June 1st. During these sessions they gained an insight into what is involved in the various aspects of their IB Diploma. Subject teachers briefed students on specific aspects of the course including what preparation can be done over the holiday break. Theory of Knowledge, Community-Action-Service, and The Extended Essay were also introduced in a brief and interesting fashion to whet the students’ appetites before next year.
